Riviera Team Rider Ben Friberg is going to paddle from Cuba to Key West!
Late July/Early August 2013
Ben Friberg will attempt to paddle non-stop from Port Hemmingway,
Cuba to Key West, Florida. The channel is 90 miles by the crow's flight.
A support boat will supply nutrition needs and give guidance for
potential fastest route. Ben and team have worked diligently since last
summer to secure necessary licenses and permits from respective
countries required to legally attempt this mission. Ben's support team
consists of captain, navigator, cook, medic, weatherman, and personal
The team will assemble in Key West, FL to begin the journey aboard catamaran, Sunluver, toward Port Hemmingway, Cuba. Sailing to Cuba from Key West will take approx. 17 hours. Once on Cuba they will begin watching for the best opportunity to launch. Elements that will influence timing will be winds, tides, Gulf Stream currents, storms, moon phase (light for paddling thru the night), and team's overall health and spirits.
Ben is hoping to complete the crossing sub-24 hours but is prepared to paddle many more if necessary. Ben set the record in 2012 for the longest distance ever paddled SUP in a 24 hour period. Paddling non-stop Ben traveled 238 miles on the Yukon River. Ben is a native of Chattanooga, Tennessee where he has enjoyed a wide variety of paddlesports over the past 20 years including: creekboating, squirtboating, whitewater SUP, and endurance paddling. He also directs Chattajack, a 31 mile SUP/Kayak race through the Tennessee River Gorge in October.
