I just returned last night to SoCal from an EPIC Weekend at the
Paddle Royal SUP Race with International field of Competitors in Puerto
Rico hosted by Velauno Paddleboarding.
I've always heard great Reviews from Paddlers who've competed in
the Race in previous years...although I hadn't commited to registering
until a week prior to race when I heard acouple of my Teammates/Friends
(Danny Ching & James Donovan) had booked their flight/trip on short
The flight from LAX to San Juan, Puerto Rico is relatively
inexpensive and our Thursday evening departure...arriving Friday morning
could accomodate our 14' Race Boards (*Depending on Airlines available
Cargo Space) which made traveling super EZ!
I've heard Jaime Torres (Race Host) mention how the Race
Organizers, Volunteers, and People of Puerto Rico strive to create a
welcoming and comfortable experience to visiting competitors.....and
that was exactly our experience the entire weekend from Shuttling From
and To the Airport, Board Handling, Dinners, Accomodations, etc.
The Event begins with a Pre-Registration evening Social Party at
the Velauno Shop with Food and Drinks to pick up Race Packets,
Shirts/Numbers, Meet/Greet, etc. before 2 days of intense
Racing....which begins on Saturday with Challenging & Varying
Conditions 8.5 Mile Race starting from a spectator friendly
Lagoon..through a Rough Water Channel into the Open Ocean to
circumnavigate some of the MOST Spectacular Tropical Island Coastline...
while avoiding breaking waves over shallow clear water Reefs...all
while a Helicopter hovers only a few hundred feet overhead filming the
The Organizers also offer numerous other races & courses for
varied abilities while providing full family entertainment at the Race
site with Race Monitors, Live Bands, Water Slides, etc.
Following a Photo Finish Race Timing System...an awesome Lunch is
provided on site with numrous other options to purchase with the Royal
Money provided with your Race Registration/Packet leading into an
afternoon of Live Entertainment...before walking back to your Beachfront
Hotel/Jacuzzi to prepare for the 2nd Day of Racing on Sunday.
Day 2 of Racing begins on Sunday morning with a 1.4 Mile Sprint
Race followed by a series of 3 other Sprint Races with Turns and
descending distances as they progress...and all totally spectator
friendly within the huge flat water lagoon.
The Overall Winners receive points based on their finish placing
over the course of 5 Different Races through the Weekend (*Double Points
for Sat. Distance Race and omitting the worse Race for Overall
Cumulative Point Standings). The Event continues throughout the Day and
into the evening with Food, Drinks, Live Bands and Award Ceremony.
In retrospect of my Experience, the Event, and Location...this may
be The "BEST" Race I've attended....considering the 100's of Races I've
competed...you'll definitely want to include this one on next years Race
Schedule and decide for yourself!!! (Tentative Date: Nov.30th-Dec. 1st
