Fit-to-Paddle - Level 3 – Leg Workout

    Riviera has Teamed up with Ramsay Mead of Paddle Core Fitness to bring you a series of workouts to strengthen your paddle stroke.  Ramsay is an exercise physiologist, master of fitness sciences, and a core trainer for 20 plus years. Ramsay is certified by the National Academy of Sports Medicine as well as a registered yoga therapist and Holistic health practitioner. He brings his own unique style to the growing sport of stand up, and we are stoked to have him on the team!

 

Fit-to-Paddle - Level 3 – Legs

Workout Notes:

• Perform a minimum of 2x a week or every other day if you like
• Perform each exercise for a minimum of 30 seconds working up to 1 minute (unless otherwise indicated)
• Perform exercises 1-5 in a circuit (one after another) up to 3x, starting with one circuit and build up
• Rest period progression – start with a 45 second rest between; then when ready, drop to 30 seconds and then to 20 seconds, then none until the last exercise (#5) is done then rest 1 minute
• Use a stop watch or timer such as the Gymboss
• Stop if form deteriorates
• Don’t forget to breath
• Take notes of your progress
• Have fun and get fit!

Single Leg Box Squat

1. Assume a seated position on a workout bench, chair or a designed, box shown here
2. Anchor one foot fixed and firm and extend the other leg out
3. Raise both arms up straight
4. With control and balance, drive through the single leg to a standing position
5. From a standing position with control, slowly lower back down into the start position that you began with

Paddler Benefits - Great movement for dealing with strength imbalances within the legs, creating balance with expressive power for stroke and board control.

Muscles Worked - Glutes, quads, hamstrings, and helps lengthen the lats

Ice Skater

1. Start with standing position
2. Raise knee to above waist while simultaneously raising same side arm straight into the air
3. Bending the supporting knee, squat down as opposite leg bends back reaching down touching raised hand to opposite front toe
4. Return to starting position – 1 set is 15 per side

THE SPACE COAST PADDLE BLAST- EARLY RESULTS

Rough weather on the day of the race turned what could have been a routine race into a challenging competition among the truly elite competitors of the sport.

The wind on the 16^th blew 15-20 mph out of the northeast , with gusts up to 25 mph, creating 4-6 ft wind swell that clashed with an equally large 9 second ground swell. Due to the conditions the 2 lap race course was shortened from 8.5 to 6.8 miles.  The 29 paddlers that rose up to the challenge were rewarded with a memorable battle that tested their abilities to the limit.

2nd Annual Soundsurfer Waterman's Challenge

It was a beautiful sunny day, with a gentle breeze - perfect conditions for a SUP race! 

     Last Sunday saw 97 paddlers on the Saugatuck River, racing to raise money for Soundsurfer - 3 children's charities and 2 environmental causes - one of which, Harborwatch, took guests for trawler rides and picked up a seahorse - the first in these waters in 3 years!  And spotted a starfish under the Downunder dock - very good signs of the healthy marine environment. 

     Shealeigh Crombie, 8 years old, won the most inspirational paddler prize and received a paddle and board from Riviera, who also donated two Danny Ching Pro Elite paddles.  She paddled almost 3m!  (The new 14' Zeedonk arrives today or Monday!)

Ron House Coastal Cruiser in the line of duty...

     The Ron House Coastal Cruiser is the All-Around SUP, the workhorse.  It can surf waves of all sizes, at 12'6" x 30" it is stable enough for the beginner, goes great downwind without losing it's flatwater speed, has tiedown spots for strapping down gear, makes a great fishing and diving platform, and is the favorite among Riviera employee's.

    Unless you're Danny Ching, you will probably never win a race on this board, and it would be pretty difficult to do an aerial, but if you paddled 4 miles out to sea with your speargun, speared a dorado with a packed lunch in your cooler, then paddled downwind 4 miles back, ultimately to ride waves into the beach, you would definetly feel like a winner!

Renegade Push Up

1. Start with body in a extended push up position
2. While maintaining torso in plank/neutral spine alignment, lift one hand up towards the arm pit
3. From the arm pit/outer chest area, slowly lower the hand back down
4. Once hand is secure repeat cycle with the opposite hand/arm

Begin with a time of 30 sec then build up to 1 minute

Key Points: Maintain neutral spine avoiding twisting and rotating of body and excessive weight shift

Advanced Movement:  Perform this exercise with dumbbells or kettle-bells, set then pull and slowly lower down

Paddler Benefits - Another great movement that trains better postural endurance that means better transfer in long distance paddles with no energy leaks

Muscles Worked - Core stabilizer, upper back lats with added resistance

 

Plank Swimmer

1. Position body in an extended push up position
2. Raise arm straight out in front so that the upper arm is inline with the ear, palm should be facing down, head stays in neutral position
3. Begin to stroke the arm in a circular position palm facing back
4. Complete the arm stroke when you tap the upper leg/hip area then retrace back, set arm down.  Secure balance /alignment then repeat on the other side

Begin with a time of 30 sec then build to 1 minute
