The Newport Aquatic Center in Newport Beach, California was the epicenter of stand up paddle racing last weekend as the 2011 Hal Rosoff Classic fired off in absolutely perfect weather.
With nearly 300 paddlers spread out between K1, Surfski, OC (Outrigger Canoe) 1, OC2, Paddleboard, and Standup Paddle boarding it was an amazing day of racing.
The short course took the SUP paddlers on the “Lido Lap” around Lido Island and back a distance of 8K (5 miles).
Danny Ching once again took the win in the unlimited division on a secret prototype 404 18' raceboard. Danny Ching has been on quite a roll dominating the SUP racing scene lately. Danny won the Tecolote 5000 back in December as well as the Hanhano Huki Ocean Challenge, and the Santa Barbara Pier-to-Pier race, on top of his win in the Orange Bowl SUP race back in Florida in January. No doubt Danny is the world's top SUP racer right now. Thomas Maximus took second place a scant 16 seconds behind Danny, which was good enough to net Maximus the win in the Masters division with a 1 hour 7 minute and 1 second time.
EJ Johnson was the top finisher for the 14-foot division crossing the line in 1 hour 13 minute and 44 seconds. Dan Gavere took 12'6" Masters division and girl friend Nikki Gregg who won the 12'6” ladies division.
